What is Pharmacology
The effects of the drug on the body
Pharmacokinetics
The way the body affects the drug
Define target protein
A protein molecule that allows another molecule to bind to it
Define ligand
A substance that binds to a target protein (a drug)
Types of receptors
Ion channels
G-protein coupled
Kinase-linked
Nuclear
Define agonist
Ligand that occupy receptors and bring about a full or maximal response
Define antagonist
- ligand that occupy or change the receptors but do not bring about any direct response
- Occupancy by an antagonist interferes with occupancy by a ligand (drug) capable of causing a response
Define affinity
The affinity of a drug is its ability to bind to its biological target (receptor, enzyme, transport system, ext.)
Define selectivity
Selectivity refers to a drugs ability to preferentially produce a particular effect and is related to the structural specifity of drug binding to receptors.
What does ADME stand for
Absorption, Distribution, Metabolise, Excretion
Routes of administration for drugs
Oral, sublingual/buccal, SC, IV, IM, IO, Inhalation, Topical, Rectal, Vaginal
What is half life
The time it takes the concentration to reduce by half
What is Oharmacodynamics
The relationship between the drug concentration at the receptor and the intensity of the pharmacological response
