What is pharmacology?
It is the science of drugs, including their ingredients, preparation, uses, and actions on the body.
What is a medication?
A substance that is used the treat or prevent disease or relive pain.
Pharamacodynamics
Is the process by which a medications works on the body.
What does a medication do once it’s taken?
It binds to receptors to produce an effect. They either stimulate the receptors to produce an effect or block the receptors to prevent other chemicals or meds from binding.
What are agonists?
Medications that cause stimulation of receptors.
What are antagonists?
Meds that bind to a receptor and block other meds or chemicals from attaching.
Dose
The amount of medication that is given.
Indications
Are the reasons for giving the drug.
Contraindications
When a medication is harmful or doesn’t have a positive effect on the patient.
Absolute Contradiction
Medication should never be given if contraindication is present.
Relative Contraindication
The benefits of administering the drug may outweigh the risks.
Side effects
Any actions of a med other than desired ones.
Unintended effect
Undesirable but pose little risk to the patient.
Untoward effect
Effects that can be harmful to the patient. (Major effect)
Enteral Medications
Enter the body through the digestive system. Normally like a pill or a liquid. Tend to absorb slowly.
