Pharmacology Flashcards
Pharmacology
Study of the effects of drugs or other organisms in biological systems.
Pharmacokynetics
What your body does to the drug. Time course. Drug absoprtion
Pharmacodynamics
What the drug does to your body.
Agonist
Drug that bind to a cell receptor (or surface). Causes identical biological respone.
Antagonist
Substance that stops the reaction of another substance.
Allergic response
Hypersensitive immune reaction to a substance. Not common for most people.
Bioavailability
Depends on absorption. Extend a substance becomes available to its biological destination. How much of a substance can reach the area through circulation.
Dose
Amount of drug being taken at a certain time.
EC50
Half minimal effective concentration. Concentration needed to cause half of the max effects.
Efficacy
Ability to produce a desired effect.
Loading dose
Minimun dose for it to be effective. Distribution vol x concentration steady bioavailability.
Placebo
Inactive substance that is identical to drug. No real effect.
Excretion
Removing waste from body.
Metabolism
Chemical reactions in cells. Food into energy
Antibiotics
Antimicrobial substances active against bacteria.
