Pharmacology Flashcards
Abortive Tx for seizures
Benzodiazepines and barbiturates
Indicated for trigeminal neuralgia
Carbamazepine
Mechanism of benzodiazepines
Increase frequency at which chloride ions are open
Mechanism for barbiturate
Increase duration at which chloride ions are open
Steve Johnson’s syndrome
Harsh rash caused by ethosuxemide , carbamazepine and lamotrigine can lead to a toxic epidermal necrolysis
Mechanism of valproate
Decrease voltage gated sodium and increase GABA
First line for generalized T-C
Side effects of valproate
Anaemia, liver hepatotoxicity, pancreatitis, spina bifida
Mechanism of phenytoin
Decrease V gated Na channels
More so for focal seizures
Side effects from phenytoin
Gingival hyperplasia, Fetal hydration syndrome, zero kinetic and P450 inducer
Mechanism of ethosuximide
Decrease T type calcium
Indication for ethosuximide
Absence seizure
Mechanism of carbamazepine
Increase refractory period of V gated Na channels
Mechanism for lamotrigine
Decrease glutamate and decrease V gated Na channel
Mechanism of Levetiracetam
Unknown
Tiagabine and Vigabatrim
Increase GABA
