Pharmacology Flashcards
Absorption
the primary factor in determining the length of time to the onset of a drug
Distribution
the transport of drugs throughout the body via circulatory system effected by dehydration
Metabolism
the chemical inactivation of a drug into metabolites which can be excreted from the body
Excretion
how the drugs are removed from the body
Classification Systems
Pharmacologic: the drug’s mechanism of action: how it produces its effects in the body
Therapeutic: what the drug does clinically
Pharmacodynamics
How medication achieves its effects. ex: primary and secondary effects
Primary effects
Palliative -relieve signs and symptoms
Supportive- supports the integrity of body functions (probiotic, antibiotic)
Substitutive- replace something missing (insulin, electrolytes)
Restorative- return to body/ maintain optimal levels
Secondary Effects
Side effects- unintended but predictable
Adverse reactions- more severe
Allergic reaction- immunes response (annoying)
Toxic reactions- kidney and liver damage
Cumulative effects- build-up of medication in pt system
Therapeutic Response
Onset-
Peak- highest level of concentration
Duration
