Pharmacology Flashcards
What are the drug pharmaceutical pregnancy categories
A - adequate studies show no risk
B - animal studies show no risk, no human studies
C - animal studies show adverse effect, no human studies. Benefits may outweigh risk
D - human studies show risk, but potential benefit may outweigh the risk
X - Animal and human studies show risk, and they will outweigh any potential risk
When should systemic antibiotics be prescribed in a dental practice
when active infection
as antibiotic prophylaxis
when placing bone or membrane
To treat aggressive periodontitis
in some cases when surgery is refused/contraindicated
in cases of refractory periodontitis due to persistant infection/weakened host response
Tetrocycline type/spectrum/interactions
bacteriostatic
Broad spectrum, gram positive and gram negative
Should not be used with warfarin
no antacids or dairy, birth control may be less effective
Patients with renal dysfunction should not take tetracycline
Metronidazole type/spectrum/interactions
Bactericidal
Spectrum obligate anaerobes (Pg, Pi) and ANUG
Patients should not consume alcohol
may increase effect of warfarin
Amoxicillin type/spectrum/interactions
Bactericidal
Broad spectrum, mainly gran negative anaerobes and gram positive
Can make birth control less effective
Clindamycin type/spectrum/interactions
Bacteriostatic
Aerobic gram negative and gram positive, anaerobic gram negative
May cause pseudomembranous colitis
Do not use in kidney transplant patients
