Pharmacology Flashcards
Collection of glands and tissues that secrete hormones into the bloodstream
Endocrine System
A chemical substance produced in the body that controls and regulates the activity of certain cells or organs.
Hormones
Three types of hormones
Peptide Hormones
Steroid Hormones
Amine Hormones
One of the principal fuels used by our body
Glucose
Cannot be given orally because of proteolytic enzymes in the GIT
Peptide
An example of a growth hormone that stimulates growth in tissue and bone
Sometrem (Protropin) /Somatropin (Humatrope)
Growth hormone inhibiting hormone [GHIH] that is contraindicated to hypersensitivity, pregnancy, lactation and with adverse effects such as GI distress, constipation/ diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, acute cholecystitis (e.g. Ocreotide [Sandostatin])
Somatostatin Agonists
An indication for diabetes insipidus, hemorrhage, and postoperative abdominal distension
Vasopressin, Pitressin Synthetic, Desmopressin
A drug that acts on the posterior pituitary gland
Oxytocin
Increases the availability of glucose
Glucocorticoids
It is used to promote lung maturation in premature infants and prevent organ transplant rejection
Glucocorticoids
A preferred drug for adrenocortical insufficiency
Hydrocortisone
Used to diagnose Cushing’s syndrome and for treatment of non-endocrine disorders
Dexamethasone
Potassium normal range
3.5 to 5 mL
Antithyroid Agents : prevent formation of thyroid hormone, inhibit conversion of T3 and T4, and increased metabolism
Thioamides
