Pharmacology 1 Flashcards
Define pharmacology?
Study of effect of drug on living system
Define pharmacodynamics?
Study of biochemical and physiological effect of drug and mechanism of action
Define pharmokinetic?
Absorption, distribution, biotransfer and extortion of drug
Define toxicology?
Adverse effect of drugs and chemical
Define pharmacotherapeutics?
Use of drugs in prevention and tx of disease
What do drugs do?
Chemical substance of known structure that when given to organism produce biological effect
Modify physiological process - don’t create new process of effect
Characteristics of drugs?
- Specific - drug produce one effect
- Selective - effect over therapeutic window
- Toxicitiy - beyond therapeutic range
Biological target of drug?
- Receptor
- Ion channels
- Enzyme
- Transporter
Class cell-surface receptor?
- Ion channel linked
- G protein linked
- Enzyme linked
Name some receptor subtypes?
Adrenoreceptor
B1 - heart - if stimulated increase HR
B2 - lungs - dilation of smooth muscle
What is EC50
Conc of drug needed to produce 50% max effect
What is potency?
Amount of drug required to produce effect - depend affinity and efficacy
What is efficacy?
Relationship between receptor occupancy and ability to produce response
What is affinity?
Ability to bind to receptor
What is difference between receptor and acceptor?
Acceptor - substrate drug bind to w/o causing effect
Receptor - cell component involved in reaction
