Pharmacological Flashcards
1
Q
First generation antipsychotics
A
Haloperidol, Chlorpromazine
2
Q
First generation antipsychotics mechanism of action
A
Block dopamine (D2) receptors in brain
3
Q
Main Haloperidol side effect
A
EPSEs (dystonia, akasthesia, parkinsonism, tremor, tardive dyskinesia, oculogyric crisis),
4
Q
Antidote for EPSEs
A
Benztropine (anticholinergic, doesn’t work for Tardive Dyskinesia)
5
Q
Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome- first or second generation pyschotics higher risk?
A
First generation, specifically Haloperidol but any dopamine receptor blocker
6
Q
Symptoms of neuroleptic malignant syndrome
A
Fever, rigidity, tremor, autonomic instability, raised CK. Can give bromocriptine.
