Pharmaceutical Chemistry Flashcards
What is a drug?
A substance that alters the biochemical processes in the body.
Why might medicine contain other unnecessary ingredients?
• To add bulk
• To improve taste
What are agonists?
Drugs that mimic the natural compound and bind to the receptor molecules to produce a similar response similar to the natural active compound.
What are antagonists?
A drug which prevents the natural compound from binding to the receptor and so blocks the natural response from occurring.
How does an enzyme inhibitor work?
By binding to the active site of the enzyme and blocking the reaction normally catalysed there.
Why does the shape and size of a drug matter?
As it effects how it interacts with a receptor binding site or the active site of an enzyme
