Adverse effects of diuretics
Dehydration, poor skin turgor, thirst, weight loss, hypotension, decreased urine output, and electrolyte imbalance.
What to Assess
Dehydration (encourage 1500ml/day (1.5 L))
Monitor electrolytes (hyponatremia, hypokalemia vs hyperkalemia)
Avoid sudden position change
Take med in the a.m.
weight taken same time every day a.m.
monitor I/O
Monitor BP same time daily for effectiveness
Monitor for Thiazide
glucose levels
consume K+ rich food
Monitor in Loop Diuretics
Hearing loss
glucose levels
