Phagocytosis Flashcards
Why are neutrophils called polymorphonuclear leukocytes ?
Varysing shapes of nucelus
What is uniques about lifecycle of neutrophil ?
Short lived
What is the primary function of neutrophil ?
First line of defence
How do neutrophils get to site of infection ?
Chemotaxis
What is the process where the neutrophil crosses the endothelial cell wall ?
Transmigration/Diapedsis
What is phagocytosis ?
the process in which neutrophil recognise and engulf foreign material
What do bacteria need to be in order to be recognised by phagocyte ?
Opsonised
How do neutrophuls kill bacteria ?
- Secrete toxic products
- O2 dependent
- O2 independent
- Neutrophil extra cellular traps
- Low pH
What are the applications of opsonophagocytic killing assay ?
- Test immune evasion capacity of bacteria
- Investigate how host factors modulate neutrophil function
- Assess neutrophil function
- Test efficiency of vaccine induced immunity
What is the peritoneal cavity ?
Membrane bound and fluid filled abdominal cavity
What does the peritoneal normally contain ?
Macrophages, T cell, B cells
What does the peritoneal cavity not contain much of ?
Neutrophils
How do you get a source of neutrophils ?
- Induce recruitments of nuetorphils to peritoneal cavity
- Recover neutrophils from peritoneal cavity
- Cell suspension of cells resident to and recruited to peritoneal cavity provide a source of neutrophils
What do you present data to ?
CFU/Ml to one decimal point
What is the multiplicity of infection ?
Ration of bacteria to cells
