tumour of chromatin cells of adrenal glands causing excessive adrenaline production

A
- sweating
- headache
- palpitations
- tremor
- tachycardia, arrhythmias
- hypertension
- nausea
- abdominal

explain why phaeochromocytoma is called 10% tumour
A
- 10% extra-adrenal
- 10% bilateral
- 10% malignant
- at least 10% familial

what investigations might be done for suspected phaeochromocytoma
A
- 24 hr urine for catecholamines
- plasma free metanephrines
if +ve, CT to locate tumour
hyperglycaemia and hypercalcaemia often seen

A
- a-blockers e.g. phenoxylbenzamine
- then B-blockers to prevent hypertensive crisis
resection of adrenal gland definitive

when would hypertensive crisis occur
A
during anaesthesia for surgery
