Q

What are the 4 different types of building blocks of the nervous system?

A
Neurones
- predominant cell types which transmit signals
Oligodendrocytes
- produce myelin
- facilitate transmission
Astrocytes
- enable homeostasis
- physical barrier
- forms Blood-Brain Barrier
Microglia
- immune cells of the brain
- phagocytose dead cells and debris
- no antibodies in brain

Q

What is the Blood-Brain Barrier?

A

Endothelial cells line the capillary walls with tight junctions between them
Processes from astrocytes form a barrier around blood vessels
Prevents large molecules entering the blood stream
Specific transporters allow certain molecules to access the brain
The Blood-Brain Barrier is not complete in some areas

Network of capillary vessels that form a structural and chemical barrier between the brain and systemic circulation
Barrier to peripheral biochemical abnormalities and xenobiotics
- including neuroactive pharmaceuticals

Q

What is the function of the hypothalamus?

A

Co-ordinates information from the top of the brain, nuclei from centre of brain and sends information down spinal cord and back up

  • integrating centre
  • homeostasis

Q

Where is the lateral ventricle in the brain?

A

Surrounds the thalamus and hypothalamus

17
Q

What is the function of the lateral ventricle in the brain?

A

Carries cerebrospinal fluid around the brain

  • CSF made in walls of ventricles
  • circulates around brain
  • homeostasis
  • supply of glucose/fluids
  • removes waste
18
Q

What structures made up the basal ganglia?

A

Caudate

Putamen

19
Q

Where is the caudate in the brain?

A

Next to the lateral ventricle

20
Q

Where is the putamen in the brain?

A

Underneath the caudate

21
Q

What is the function of the putamen?

A

Fluid movements of the body

  • not jerky
  • motor functions
22
Q

Which part of the brain is affected by Huntington’s and Parkinson’s diseases?

A

Putamen

23
Q

Where is the amygdala in the brain?

A

Close to the hippocampus in the front part of the temporal lobe

24
Q

What is the function of the amygdala?

A

Emotion centre
- close to hippocampus
Associated with memories
