pH Scale Flashcards
What are the three numbers found on a pH scale?
0, 7, 14
What does an acid stand for?
Hydrogen (H)
What does a base stand for?
Hydroxide (OH)
pH?
The measure of Hydrogen (H) ions
pOH?
The measure of Hydroxide (OH) ions
pH+pOH?
pH + pOH = 14 every time. So the H and OH no matter what, add up to 14
What is litmus paper?
Litmus paper is used to measure the pH level of a substance
What is molarity?
Molarity shows the amount of ions in a solution (OH - Hydroxide)
To be an acid, the pH number has to be…?
Less than 7
To be a base, the pH number has to be…?
More than 7
Example
pH - 3 pOH - 11
Molarity of H = 1x10^-3
Molarity of OH = 1x10^-11
Arrhenius Acid
Any species that increases the concentration of H in an aqueous solution
Arrhenius Base
Any species that increases the concentration of OH in an aqueous solution
