pH + pH scale Flashcards
What does the pH of a solution indicate?
Whether a solution is an acid, base, or neutral, and how strong it is.
A solution must have a pH of what to be an acid?
pH of 1 - 6.9
A solution must have a pH of what to be a base?
pH of 7.1 - 14
A solution must have a pH of what to be a neutral?
pH of 7
**however a neutral can be from 6-8 since 6 is a weak acid and 8 is a weak base.
What is an example of a weak base? (pH scale number)
pH of 8
What is an example of a strong base? (pH scale number)
pH of 14
What is an example of a weak acid? (pH scale number)
pH of 6
What is an example of a strong acid? (pH scale number)
pH of 1
What does the pH scale focus on/how is it determined?
pH focuses on concentrations of hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-)
What does the pH scale go from and end at?
Values very close to 0 through 14
If there are more OH-, what does that indicate?
More basic
If there are more H+, what does that mean?
More acidic
