Describe the constitution of 1812.

A

For electing the governor the voters voted for two candidates then the legislature chose one of the two to be governor. No governor can have more than one term. Only white make landowners can vote and participate in government and free men of color can be educated and own property but they can’t participate in gov and vote. The constitution followed the U.S. Constitution by criminal law and followed the Kentucky constitution by civil law

Describe the events of the St. John Baptiste Parish Slave Rebellion.

A

Largest slave rebellion in history. Despondent and Jupiter formed a slave rebellion in St. John the Baptiste Parish and about 500 slaves joined. They marched toward New Orleans looting and burning plantations along the way. Hampton quickly assembled soldiers and militia men and attacked the slaves just outside of New Orleans. Slave hunters captured every slave who escaped. The Americans quick and decisive action putting down the rebellion finally earned the Creoles respect.

The Burr Conspiracy

A

Burr hatched an ambitious scheme. He hoped to raise a small Private army, seize control of some western land, and create his own country. General Wilkinson and several people involved in the Spanish Conspiracy helped. Wilkinson backed out and told Jefferson. Authorities eventually arrested Burr and charged him with treason, making him the first person ever tried for treason under the U.S constitution. Burr was set free, but his reputation was ruined, so he left the U.S

The West Florida Rebellion

A

Most settlers in the area, Americans, came to resent Spanish rule because Spain would not allow them to vote or participate in government. Spain stopped land grant policy, strictly regulated trade, and would not allow prostestant churche. Settlers drew up a plan that created a representation government for west Florida, they presented it too the Spanish commandant and he agreed. Thomas led about 75 militiamen in an attack. The American militia killed 2 Spanish soldiers and wounded several others. The rest of the Spanish surrendered.
