What are settlement patterns?
Settlements have different shapes. Some are long and thin, some are compact and almost round others are broken up and spread apart. These different shapes are known as settlement patterns.
Describe dispersed settlement pattern
A dispersed settlement has buildings that are well spread out. Settlements with this pattern are often found in highlands where it is not easy to build houses together. Here, people also need more land to grow their crops and graze their animals.
Describe nucleated settlement
A nucleated settlement has buildings grouped closely together. Settlements with this shape often grew around a road junction or a river crossing. People built their houses close together for safety. The pattern is common in lower , flatter parts of Britain.
