pft interpertation Flashcards
patient diagnosis
pulmonary function test is one small piece of the puzzle that enable a physician to accurately diagnose pulmonary disease
thorough patient history
thorough patient history may take 45 minute to one hour when physician will proceed from the head to toe examination
physical exam
can take from 10 to 30 min depending what is physician looking for and physical exam can narrow to 1 to 2 possible potential problems
Pathology of restrictive disease
these disease cause changes in compliance, reducing the lung compliance or stiffness
theses diseases may also reduce the ability of the lung to fill mechanically
thoracic disease: structural
scoliosis kyphosis kyphoscoliosis pectus caranatum bone disease pneumothorax
thorac disease: neuromuscular
gullain-barre myasthenia gravis polio multiple sclerosis muscular dystrophy
intrathoracic disease
consolidation
pneumoconiosis: silicosis
asbestosis
berylliosis
abdominal disorders
pain binder/clothing obesity pregancy ascites(peritoneal fluid accumulation)
obstructive lung diseas
patient gets the air in but can’t get it out
emphysema
destruction of alveolar septal wall
destruction of pulmonary capillaries
air trapping
increase compliance
bronchitis
inflammation of the peripheral airway
excessive mucous production
bronchial obstruction
hyperinflation
asthma
inflammation of small airway
incrase mucous production
bronchial muscle constriction
hyperinflation
bronchiectasis
dilation of bronchial airway
excessive mucous production
hyperinflation
atelectasis and parechymal fibrosis
