Describe the soils of the Pfalz
- 250 million years ago - alluvial soils - sand, clay and silt
- Soils were compacted into sandstone and colored red by iron oxide
- Volcanoes pushed basalt to the surface
- 50 million years ago, tectonic activity caused Alps to rise and Rhine basin to fall
- Pfalz filled with sea water and dried forming limestone and shell-limestone
- Filled with sand, gravel and loess by water, erosion and wind
- Ice age finished it all over with rivers grinding primary rock into fine grains, and then distributed by winds

○ It settled under the Palatinate Forest in Pfalz and was held in place by vegetation
