What are the 7 practical issues with research methods?
Representative, validity, reliability, verstehen, accessibility, expense, time consuming.
What are ethical issues?
Moral guidelines. The application of moral rules and professional codes of conduct to the collection of data. These moral guidelines are set by the British Sociological Association.
What are the 5 ethical issues with research methods?
Consent, sensitivity, deceit, confidentiality, anonymity.
What is a case study for issues regarding ethics?
Humphreys Tearoom Trade. Study on impersonal sex in public toilets. Sensitive, no consent and invasion of privay and no confidentiality.
What is the problem with following ethics?
Can result in a decrease in the validity of the results as if people know they’re being studied then their behaviour could change.
What is Positivism?
They believe that society exists independent from individuals and it has an factual actual reality and can be investigated scientifically. They prefer structured, quantitative methodology and aim to look for predictable and formulaic patterns of behaviour. e.g Durkheim Suicide.
What do Positivists like the methodology to be?
Representative, large scale, reliable, quantifiable methodology.
What is Interpretivism?
They assume that society is dependent on individuals. It is a subjective reality that is created by individuals interactions and the meanings individuals give to interactions and behaviour. Society is a social construction.
What do Interpretivists like the methodology to be?
Valid, verstehen, unstructured, small scale, qualitative methodology. Aim to uncover and interpret meanings behind behaviour and Interactions.
What is Realism?
They see the benefit of Positivist methods but recognise that no study can be completely objective and people are unpredictable. They try to explore people’s meanings and motives as well as identifying patterns and trends.
