Pests and diseases Flashcards
What pest would you most likely find affecting chrysanthemums and orchids?
Thrips
What fungal disease causes fuzzy grey/brown mould and soft decay of plant tissue?
Botrytis
What fungal disease causes frosty looking mould and is fatal only in extreme cases?
Powdery mildew
What soil-borne fungus causes stunted growth, and wilted, shriveled leaves(and is often fatal)?
Root rot
What fungal disease ,that typically affects roses, causes black spots surrounded by yellow rings on leaves?
Black spot/black leaf
If a plant has red/orange spots on leaves, what disease may be the cause?
Rust (fungus)
Tiny green insects are sucking sap from plant stems. What pest is this?
Aphids/greenfly
Small orange/red insects are living on the underside of leaves. There also appears to be silky webs. What pest might this be?
Spider mites
How do you treat botrytis?
Prune off and destroy infected part of the plant. Can usually be helped by improving growing conditions and sanitation. If extreme, use a botrytis fungicide.
How would you deal with powdery mildew?
Fungicides can be used however, a spray made of baking soda, dish soap, vegetable oil, and water is just as effective and safer.
How might you treat black leaf?
Remove and dispose of infected leaves to prevent further spread.
Good air circulation to keep leaves dry is important.
Spray plant with fungicide.
What can you do to try and control aphids?
Spray aphids with mix of dish soap and water. This will suffocate the. Can also use neem oil as its a natural pesticide.
A plant has squiggly, pale lines on it. What might this pest be?
Leaf miners (insect larvae that feed within leaf tissue creating mines/tunnels)
Tin black bugs are flying around a houseplant, what pest might this be?
Fungus gnats or sciarid flies (They love and live in damp compost, so can help treat by allowing soil to dry completely between wattering)
