Pest Control Flashcards
What is a pesticide?
Poisonous chemical that is used to control organisms considered harmful to agriculture or organisms involved in disease transmission
What 5 things do pests do?
Feed on crops and animals
Compete with crop organisms for resources
Directly cause disease
Make infections more likely
Spoil food when it’s being transported or stored
4 advantages of chemical control
Effective Pests eradicated quickly Relatively cheap Can be applied on a small scale Does not require high levels of skill to apply
Disadvantages of chemical control
Not specific- can eradicate beneficial insects
Resistance
Bio accumulation
Long term overexposure could cause harm to humans
What is the aim of biological control?
To artificially increase the populations of the agent to reduce pest populations below the economic damage threshold.
5 advantages of bio control?
Highly specific Long term Inexpensive in long term No environmental contamination Greenhouse use
6 disadvantages of bio control?
Agents are slow to respond to increased n° pests Examples not known for most problems Detailed knowledge of life cycle needed Expensive- high level of research Frequent input to attain balance Introduction needs to be large scale
What does integrated control include?
Bio control + pest resistant crops + varying cultivation techniques + minimal specific pesticides
