Rhetorical question
Intended to make the reader feel that there is no other way to see the or respond to the question being posed.
alliteration
a repeated sound/syllable gives emphasis and prominence to a point or idea. Helps the reader remember a point.
repetition
designed to add emphasis to a key idea or argument.
anecdote
personal stories intended to show reader that the writer is still a human and has had personal experiences like them.
generalisation
appeals to our general sense of what seems true
cliches
an overused expression that Helps the reader feel familiar with the material being presented
hyperbole
descriptive words that aim to create an image in the readers mind that helps make the point being argued more graphic, striking and more easily understood.
metaphor
an implied comparison that creates associations in the readers mind by pointing out similarities.
emotive language
plays on a readers ‘heartstrings’ by expressing an emotive appeal to the situation
inclusive language
language that makes reader feel included while also referring to a wider inclusion like family or a large community.
connotation
words that carry emotional meaning beyond what is stated.
