Alliteration affect on reader:
Adds emphasis and reinforces meaning, especially where an idea is repeated. Often used to create a highly emotive image.

Words that arouse emotion
Ex: powerful emotive words like sleazy, slimy, vicious, outrageous.

Evokes strong emotional response in order to coerce agreement from reader
Evidence definition
Information/ facts or statements used to support a belief or point of view. Ex: statistics, research, expert opinion/ advice, facts.
Evidence effect on the reader
Positions the reader, adds weight to back up the author’s point of view; often seems objective and irrefutable.
Hyperbole definition
Being over the top to get a point across Ex: the wicket keeper grabbed the catch as fast as lightning.
Hyperbole effect on reader
Adds emphasis and gives clear picture; helps remember a point or situation; usually part of a cumulative effect.
Inclusive language definition
Includes the reader/ audience by assuming we all agree/ disagree. Ex: we all know that, we all feel that.
Inclusive language effect on reader:
Engages reader and is friendly- gains sympathy or persuades reader to reject an idea, individual.
Metaphor definition:
A comparison that decides one thing in terms of another. Doesn’t use like or as. Ex: time is a subtle thief of youth.
Metaphor effect on the reader:
Can reinforce a point without mere repetition; image creates interest- engages reader, adds colour and highlights a point.
Repetition definition
Saying the same word or phrase more than once. Ex: never, never, never, to be released!
Repetition effect on the reader
Gives emphasis and prominence to a point or idea; repeats ideas to reinforce a point, makes readers remember the point.
Rhetorical question definition
Questions that don’t require an answer. Ex: are we going to accept these hospital conditions in our country?
Rhetorical question effect on reader
Powerful device to manipulate reader to agree because assumes the answer is obvious.
Simile definition
One thing is linked to another using as or like. Ex: he ran like a rocket. As slow as a rabbit.
Simile affect on reader:
Clarifies and enhances an idea or situation. Effective if comparing is unexpected as a surprise; aptness of comparison can help make a point.
Alliteration definition
Repeating and playing upon the same letter.
Example: a back-breaking job.
