Argument
The writers position on an issue
Claim
Specific piece of information that supports the claim
Evidence
A dangerous type of overgeneralization. It can lead to unfair judgements of people based on their ethnic background, beliefs, practices or physical appearance
Stereotype
Messages that create strong feelings to make a point
Emotional appeal
Broad statement about a class or category of people, ideas, or things
Generalization
False or misleading statements
Faulty reasoning
Suggests a person should believe/do because everyone else does it
Bandwagon
Language consisting of words with strongly positive or negative connotations
Loaded language
A statement to prove that’s someone is wrong
Refute
To prove something is false by using arguments or evidence; disprove opposing arguments
Rebuttal
A structured argument, that requires preparation, with 2 opposing teams
Debate
An opinion piece that usually appears in newspaper or new broadcast; expresses opinions
