Judges and Magistrates
Judges and magistrates preside over court cases: they make sure the rules are followed and that the trial is fair.
Judges sit in intermediate and superior courts (District and Supreme Courts) and adjudicate cases.
A magistrate is in charge of a lower court.
Judges associate
A confidential secretary to the judge. They perform clerical duties.
Solicitors
Solicitors give legal advice on a wide variety of legal issues. They can appear in court on behalf of their clients, but they usually approach a barrister to do so instead.
Barristers
Barristers specialise in one area of law and will represent their client in a court proceeding, presenting the clients case and giving legal advice.
Witness
A witness gives evidence regarding the case in court. They must swear an oath to tell the truth.
Court Officer
A court officer is responsible for the court lists and calls witnesses into the courtroom. They manage the jury room and administer witness oaths.
Correction Service Officer
Correction Service Officers escort the accused to and from the courtroom (In criminal cases only)
Jury
A panel of citizens who consider the evidence presented and make a verdict.
Plaintiff
The person who brings civil action against someone else.
Defendant
The person who must defend their actions. Also known as the accused.
