What is the definition of personality disorders?
A disorder of inner experience and behaviour which is enduring, persistent and pervasive and is distressing or results in impairment of social function
What is the aetiology of personality disorders?
ADHD increases risk of antisocial PD
Childhood trauma/sexual abuse- increases type B risk/borderline
Insecure attachment type increases risk of borderline PD
Bio management of PD?
Bio:
- Treat comorbid condtions- antidepressants for impulsivity or type C’s
- Antipsychotics for type A and type B
What is psychological treatment of PD?
Dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT)- lasts for 12 months
CBT
What are the cluster A PDs
Clue characterised by odd behaviours
Paranoid
Schizoid (loner/aloof, detached)
Shizotypal (odd eccentric behaviour, difficult relationships)
What are the cluster B PD’s
Clue characterised by impulsive/ aggressive/ dramatic behaviour
- Antisocial
- Borderline/emotionally unstable
- Histirionic
- Narcistic
What are the cluster C PD’s
Clue characterised by anxiety
Avoidant (fear of failing)
Obsessive/anankastic (perfectionist)
Dependent (fear of abdondement)
