That you make yourself out of the information that you gather in the world

Because the stories follow archetypes that capture our imaginations; especially the archetype of the hero
Where do thoughts come from, and how does this relate to the human artistic tradition?
Thoughts come from dreams and fantasies. Art represents the collective human effort to explain thought through story, music, and the fine arts.
How recent is the human preoccupation with what the world is made of?
Within the past 500 years. Prior to the scientific revolution, it wasn’t a form of thinking at all. And we are still primarily concerned with how to conduct ourselves in the world.

- God asks Jonah to save the city of Ninevah, so that God does not destroy it
- Jonah runs away and boards a ship, falls asleep
- The sea turns stormy & the crew throws everything overboard
- The crew casts lots to see who is at fault; Jonah loses
