Temporary stopping of thoughts or feelings as to protect against them.

Describe the Neurotic defenses of Reaction formation and denial.
Reaction formation = unacceptable impulse or thought transformed to opposite. (showering a person you hate with kindness, gay man that hates his sexuality becomes a pastor).
Denial = unconscious repression of unacceptable thoughts, feeling, drives, ext.
Describe the narcissistic defense of Projection and Projective identification.
Projection = shifting unacceptable thought /impulses/feelings into an outside person or institution. (you hate someone and project onto them and think they hate you)
Projective identification = unacceptable thoughts/feelings are projected onto another person, who then identifies with it (patient accuses doctor of being incompetent, and the doctors starts to feel incompetent.
