What are traits?
durable dispositions to behave in a particular way across a variety of situations
What is personality?
a person’s unique constellation of consistent behavioural traits
What is temperament?
physiological dispositions in response to the environment
What is Freud’s take on mental illness?
mental illness is a result of unexpressed sexual and aggressive urges in the unconscious
What does Freud say about personality?
personality is according to Freud is a result of:
- early childhood experiences
- unconscious motives and conflicts
- coping strategies
What are the three different components of the mind that effect behaviour?
- preconventional
- conventional
- postconventional
What is the preconventional level?
Composed of stage 1 and 2:
- Punishment orientation (right & wrong determined by wat is punished)
- Naive reward orientation (right & wrong determined by what is rewarded)
What is the conventional level
composed of stage 3 and 4:
- Good boy/girl orientation (right & wrong determined by others’ approval/disapproval)
- Authority orientation (right & wrong determined by society’s rules and laws)
What is the postconventional level?
composed of stages 5 and 6:
- social contract orientation (right & wrong determined by society’s rules, but they don’t always have to be rigidly followed)
- individual principles and conscience orientation (right & wrong determined by abstract ethical principles)
What are the levels of awareness?
- Conscious
- Preconscious
- Unconscious
What is the conscious level of awareness?
- content we are aware of
- our current train of thought
- the content of working memory
What is the preconscious level of awareness?
- content beneath awareness that is easy to access
- our current physiological state
- long term-memory storage
What is the unconscious level of awareness?
- content that is well beneath awareness and difficult to access
- these are dangerous thoughts, memories or desires
