What is a trait?
a relatively stable quality (or attribute) of an individual’s personality,
influencing behaviour in a particular direction.
what are traits of openness?
open to different experiences, likes to try something new, and has a broad range of
interests.
Open-minded persons are willing to try new things, curious about the world, love to travel, have a great imagination, are adventurous, and tend to be creative.

> Creative arts (e.g. Writing, designing).
Pilot, lawyer, philosopher, or entrepreneur.
What are characteristic of people high in Conscientiousness?
Individuals who are high in conscientiousness are thoughtful, have good self-control, and are goal-oriented.
Self-discipline, being highly organized, and the habits of planning ahead and setting and following schedules.
Downside: they easily get upset if things do not go as planned.
What are jobs linked to Conscientiousness?
Conscientious people will flourish in jobs that require a lot
of planning and have tight deadlines
> Freelance writers, doctors, actors, entrepreneurs, politicians,
or consultants.
What are traits of extraversion
Extroverted individuals are sociable, talkative, assertive, and friendly. They like to be the center of attention.
Downside: tend not to think before they speak.

Extroverts find it easy to make new friends and love to be
in social circles > a career path that involves working with a lot
or many new people
> Sales, public relations, event planning, politics, television, or
education.
Traits of agreeableness
Agreeable individuals have empathy, care, and concern for others. This personality type’s attributes are kindness, altruism, trust, and
affection for others. They tend to be more cooperative
≠ Those who have low agreeableness: tend to be more competitive and, at times, even manipulative.

> Nurses, counselors, religious leaders, teachers, and
founders or members of non-profit organizations or charities.
characteristics of neuroticism
Characterized by emotional instability, mood swings, anxiety, sadness, and irritability > worry a lot, easily get upset, and are very prone to
anxiety.
Jobs of neurotic ppl
Jobs that cause fewer worries, anxiety, and pressure >
Librarians, yoga instructors, massage therapists, food
scientists, or freelance writers.

how can companies improve engagement?
Connect what employees do to what they care about:
EX:
- Revise your organization’s mission statement to connect with employee values.
- Show how an employee’s work is related to the organization’s purpose. Employees have to see a connection
between their day-to-day work and the organization’s greater purpose.
Make the work less stressful and more enjoyable
EX:
- Offer employees the flexibility to try new work tasks so they can discover their intrinsic interests.
- Grant employees more autonomy. Autonomy is critical to fostering intrinsic motivation.
Boost employees’ sense of confidence
EX: Consider a mentorship program.
- Reward employees with time in addition to money.
- Implement tools that discourage after-hours emails.
