Define Extrinsic Motivation
Motivation that is non-self determined, they’re driven by rewards and praise
Define Intrinsic Motivation
Motivation that is self-driven, they’re driven by autonomy and passion.
Define Amotivation
Amotivation is an absence in motivation. This is a barrier
Confidence
The belief a person has in their own abilities
Self confidence
Self confidence is an athlete’s conviction that they have the skills, abilities and talent to succeed
Self-Belief
Self belief is an athlete’s trust in their ability to succeed, regardless of past performance
Self-efficacy
Self efficacy is an athlete’s belief that they have in their ability to perform a specific task
Fixed mindset
A mental state in which the individual believes their abilities are set in stone
Growth Mindset
A mental state in which the individual believes that their abilities can be improved
The five-factor model of personality
Is a helpful tool for classifying personality traits and make predictions on how people with different personality types may act in specific situations.
Openness
The tendency of a person to be open to new experiences
Conscientiousness
The tendency of a person to work hard and be dependable
Extraversion
is the tendency of a person to be socially confident
agreeableness
the tendency of a person to cooperate
neuroticism
the tendency of a person to experience unpleasant feelings
Personal Ability
Is a term used to describe the qualities and skills a person uses to complete a task.
Inherited Qualities
Genetic abilities and qualities (such as speed or height)
Learned skills
Personal abilities that have been trained (such as tactics and strategies)
Genetic Disposition
Is a term used to describe the physical and psychological characteristics that every person inherits from their biological parents
Ectomorph
People who are naturally lean, have longer limbs, narrow frame and have a low tendency to build muscle and store fat
Mesomorph
People who are naturally more muscular, athletic and lean. (Easier to gain muscle or fat than ectomorphs.)
Endomorph
People who are naturally stockier, wider and shorter with a higher tendency to gain muscle or fat
Gender
Is a term used to refer to the state of being male or female. A combination of biological, social and cultural characteristics and identities that are formed in response to their environment.
Sex
Biological and physical characteristics (genitalia and genetic differences)
Previous experiences of physical activity
The memories of participating in certain sports. These experiences act as either barriers or enablers to participating in sport.
Self-determination theory
Is a theory that represents an individuals motiviation on a continuum. From Amotivation to extrinsic motivation to intrinsic motivation.
