Why Y/H
Why Manchester
Why Y and H
Previous experience - Intercalated in Sheffield, absolutely loved the city, the people and working at the hospital and university/SiTran
Excellent teaching hospitals in Yorkshire and Humber - e.g. Royal hallamshire, northern general, leeds general with three medical schools in proximity - Sheffield, Leeds and Hull York - lots of opportunities
Sheffield allows AFP trainees to pursue their own interest - and devising a project, seeking a supervisor all with the support that I previously experienced during my intercalation.
- Administrative, clinical and academic support
Quite often prescribed - can make your own programme - approach supervisors, design project - will be very fulfilling - imbed myself into the Sheffield academic community
Leeds has some very interesting opportunities particularly with Dr Ryan Matthews in neurosurgery, Ms Bourke in plastics/hand surgery
Application of technology to clinical practice
4 month academic research placement

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time
I will be 34 years old.
As I plan to undertake a PhD, I will be 3 years into orthopaedic training, preferably as an academic clinical fellow.
By this point, I hope to have discovered an area of research that I can continue to pursue for the rest of my career. I hope to have experienced many academic intitutions and have an idea of which I would like to stay in as I begin to put together my own research team.
As a clinician, I hope to have developed key surgical skills and be able to perform small surgeries unsupervised.
I would also like to have a regular teaching committment where I can provide mentorship and make changes to a university curriculum.
What do you hope to achieve in AFP
i) Opportunity to aid research in a field of my choice - ideally neurointerventional radiology
ii) Opportunity to do research within a research faculty –> well-supported
iii) Further teaching on research methodology and statistics
iv) Opporunity to apply/develop coding skills (involved in computational medicine)
v) Develop stronger methodology, appraisal skills to equip me for the role of a clinical / academic clinician
