Person's and Career Flashcards
What is a Career?
Career can be defined as a pattern of work experience comprising the entire life span of a person and which
is general seen with regard to a number of phases or stages reflection the transition from one stage of life
to the next (Weinert, 2001).
What is Goal Setting?
Goal setting is a major component of the career planning process. The definition of goal setting is the
process of identifying something an individual want to accomplish and establish measurable goals and
timeframes.
Goal setting is a technique pioneered by Locke (1968) which affects
performance in four ways:
- focuses attention
- mobilizes effort in proportion to the demands of the task
- enhances persistence
- encourages the individual to develop strategies for achieving their goals
Five golden rules of goal setting:
Set Goals that Motivate You
When you set goals for yourself, it is important that they motivate you this means making sure that they
are important to you, and that there is value in achieving them.
Five golden rules of goal setting:
Set SMART Goals
a. Set Specific Goals
Your goal must be clear and well defined. Vague or generalized goals are unhelpful because they don’t
provide sufficient direction.
b. Set Measurable Goals
Include precise amounts, dates, and so on in your goals so you can measure your degree of success.
c. Set Attainable Goals
Make sure that it’s possible to achieve the goals you set. If you set a goal that you have no hope of
achieving, you will only demoralize yourself and erode your confidence.
d. Set Relevant Goals
Goals should be relevant to the direction you want your life and career to take. By keeping goals aligned
with this, you’ll develop the focus you need to get ahead and do what you want.
e. Set Time-Bound Goals
Your goals must have a deadline.
Five golden rules of goal setting:
Set Goals in Writing
The physical act of writing down a goal makes it real and tangible.
Five golden rules of goal setting:
Make an Action Plan
This step is often missed in the process of goal setting.

Remember, goal setting is an ongoing activity not just a means to an end.
