Persian Gulf (Dubai) Flashcards
Where is Dubai?
Location: on the Persian Gulf coast in the United Arab Emirates, north east of Abu Dhabi
Describe industry on the Persian Gulf.
− The Jebel Ali port is the busiest port in the Middle East and has over 1 million m2 of container yard with 3 container terminals. It is 35km southwest of Dubai next to the Jebel Ali palm.
Reason for growth and development: the presence of the Persian Gulf enables port activities to take place, especially with its large depth of up to 17m for large container ships.
Describe residential on the Persian Gulf.
− Jumeirah Beach Residence contains six clusters of high rise apartments containing several swimming pools, shops, restaurants, gyms and hotels. It is able to accommodate 15,000 people and is 1.7km long being made of reclaimed land.
Reason for growth and development: the presence of the beach (reclaimed land) and Persian Gulf making the waterfront area an attractive place to live.
Describe energy on the Persian Gulf.
− The Persian Gulf and its coastal areas are the world’s largest single source of crude oil (in 2002 it held nearly 2/3 of the world’s crude oil reserves). Oil was first found in 1938.
Reason for growth and development: dead aquatic creatures (such as turtles, various fish including the Clown fish, octopus and eels) in the Persian Gulf have settled and their remains covered by mud and over time the pressure has created crude oil.
Describe recreation & leisure (tourism) on the Persian Gulf.
− Palm Jumeirah is a man-made island in the shape of a palm tree that extends into the Gulf. It has various restaurants and cafés (such as Costa Coffee) and opportunities for helicopter tours located on the outermost part of the surrounding wall of the palm
Reason for growth and development: from the building of the largest coastal reclamation scheme and sediment dredged from the seafloor enabled the Jumeirah palm to be built. The Gulf is also relatively shallow enabling fewer amounts of dredged material to be used (33 million m3 in total).
Describe conservation on the Persian Gulf.
− Coastal Zone Management Plan on the Jumeirah coastline
− Emirates Marine Environmental Group overseas a 25 km2 area on the beach adjacent to Palm Jebel Ali to provide safe nesting areas for Hawksbill turtles. They are involved in catching red foxes are relocating them away from turtles to prevent predation.
Reason for growth and development: the Dubai coastline was extended by 520km by the building of the Palm Islands creating sandy habitats for Hawksbill turtles.
Conflicts and resolutions
Residential
On the Palm Jumeirah access and exit can be difficult at peak times, with noise pollution and air pollution from congestion. Resolution: The Salik toll (road toll) was put in place in 2007, with toll gates being in areas such as Safa.
Conflicts and resolutions
Recreation and leisure and conservation.
The marine environment has been damaged from the construction of the palm Jumeirah from the disruption to the coral reef and fish stocks. Plumes of sediment (from the dredging of 33 million m3 of sand) have smothered sparse coral outcrops. Resolution: new dive sites will be created from the islands enabling more coral and aquatic habitats to thrive.
