perry Flashcards
Hypotheses
promote closeness among participants who are highly empathic, but might have an opposite effect on those with low empathic traits
Sample
- 54 males
Undergrad students at Haifa University
ages 19-32
5 left handed participants
no neuro disorders
all normal eyesight
participated in experiment 1+2
Sampling Method
volunteer sample for course credit
Method
Lab experiment (Haifa University)
Design: repeated measures design
Design: Allocating P’s level of the IV
Mixed experimental design (individual groups and repeated measures design)
double blind
neither participant nor experimenter knew whether the participant received the OT or the Saline Solution
general aim
To examine whether OT (oxytocin) has a differential effect on
preferred interpersonal distance depending on the individual’s
initial empathy traits
specific aim
Find out whether highly empathetic individuals would prefer
closer distances while low empathy individuals would prefer
greater interpersonal distances when given oxytocin (OT)
procedure
Each participant was given drops of either 24 international units (IU) in 250 ml of
intranasal OT (oxytocin) OR sterile saline solution (placebo). Ps self-administered the
drops under supervision.
conclusion
High empathy: people with high empathy wanted less interpersonal
distances after OT was given in comparison to a placebo
Low empathy: people with low empathy wanted more interpersonal
distances after OT was given compared to a placebo
data
● Mean distance between chairs
● Mean distance between table and plant
● Preferred angle for the furniture pairs
Ethics
Had informed consent
Generalizability
Lacks ecological validity
Only males used; OT affects genders differently
