peroxisomes and mitochondria Flashcards
1
Q
What are the functions of peroxisomes?
A
- Breaks down phytanic acid by alpha oxidation
- breaks down VLCFAs by beta oxidation, produces H2O2
- Catalase degrades H2O2
- Detoxification - breakdown of alcohol and purines
- biosynthesis - of myelin precursor, bile acids, cholesterol
2
Q
Where are peroxisomes located?
A
Everywhere, but abundant in liver and kidneys
3
Q
What are some peroxisomal diseases?
A
- Zellweger syndrome
- x linked adrenoleukodystrophy
- adult refsum disease
4
Q
What are the functions of mitochrondria?
A
- energy production
- calcium storage
- regulation of apoptosis
- catabolism-beta oxidation of FAs and pyruvate into acetyl CoA
5
Q
What is heteroplasmy?
A
a mixture of mutated and normal mitochondria present in mother’s egg cell that redistribute unevenly as zygote divides. Tissues with more mutated mitochondria show more signs of disease.
