Permanent And Induced Magnets Flashcards
What are the two poles of a magnet called?
North and south poles
What is a magnetic field?
A region where magnetic materials experience a non-contact force
How can a magnetic field be represented visually?
-By drawing magnetic field lines.
-Magnetic field lines go from north to south which show you which way the force would act on a North Pole if it was at that point in the field
-The closer together the lines, the stronger the magnetic field.
Where is the magnetic field strongest in a magnet?
The magnetic field is strongest at the poles of a magnet where the field lines are most dense
Is the force between a magnet and a magnetic material always attractive or repulsive?
The force between a magnet and a magnetic material is always attractive.
What happens when two poles of a magnet are brought near each other?
-they will exert a force on each other
-Like poles repel each other
-unlike poles attract each other.
What is inside a compass that allows it to point in the direction of a magnetic field?
A tiny bar magnet
How can you use a compass to visualise a magnetic field?
By moving a compass around a magnet and tracing its position on paper to build up a picture of the magnetic field
What direction do compasses point when not near a magnet?
North
Why do compasses always point north when not near a magnet?
Because the Earth generates its own magnetic field, indicating that the inside (core) of the Earth must be magnetic
What are the two types of magnets?
Permanent magnets and induced magnets
What is the difference between permanent magnets and induced magnets?
-Permanent magnets produce their own magnetic field
-Induced magnets become magnetic when placed in a magnetic field.
Is the force between permanent and induced magnets attractive or repulsive?
Attractive
What happens to induced magnets when the magnetic field is removed?
The magnets quickly lose their magnetism and stop producing a magnetic field.
