Peritoneal dialysis Flashcards

Q
What is periotoneal dialysis?
A
This uses the lining of the patient’s peritoneum as a dialysis membrane. Fluid is injected via an indwelling plastic tube inserted through the abdominal wall into this abdominal cavity.
The lining of the abdomen, the peritoneum, serves as the natural filtering membrane. The fluid remains in the body for several hours, allowing exchange and equilibrium with the blood in the underlying vessels. The fluid is then discarded.
