Peripheral Vascular System Flashcards
major arteries of the arm
subclavian, axillary, brachial, radial, ulnar, palmar arches
major arteries of the leg
iliac, femoral, popliteal, tibial, dorsalis pedis, pedal arch
Deep Veins of the Legs carry____ of the venous return from the lower extremities
90%
major veins of the lower leg
iliac, greater/lesser saphenous, femoral, popliteal, tibial
name two types of venous connections
anastomotic veins and communicating veins
lymph nodes drain lymph into what system
venous
what are the nodes i the arm called?
epitrochclear and axillary
what are the groups of the superficial inguinal nodes?
horizontal and vertical groups
what are some red flag when assessing the peripheral vascular system?
pain in extremities with out trauma, intermittent claudication, cold/numbness/pallor/hair loss in legs, color changes in finger tips in cold weather, swelling/redness/tenderness in legs of feet
what do you look for when inspecting the P.V. of the arms?
shoulder to finger tips: size, symmetry, swelling, venous pattern, color of skin and nail beds, texture of skin, pulses
what do you look for when inspecting the P.V. of the legs?
size, symmetry, swelling, venous pattern,
pigmentation,
rashes, scars, ulcers*,
color, texture, nail bed color, hair distribution on lower legs feet and toes, pulses, temperature
where are the best places to look for (pitting) edema?
dorsum of the foot, behind medial malleoulus, over shins
What are some special tests you can do to assess the PVS?
Allen’s test, postural color changes, mapping, test competency of venous valvesq
how do you test postural color changes?
elevate the pt’s legs, when they dangle them the color should return in 10 seconds
what are 3 types of ulcers?
venous/arterial/neuropathic
