Peripheral vascular exam - venous Flashcards
What are the most common venous disorders?
Varicose veins
Superficial thrombophlebitis
DVT
Chronic venous insufficiency
What causes variscocities?
Normally the superficial veins drain into the deep veins. Incompetence in the valves causes this to go backwards/ retrograde filling causes them to become tortuous.
What is a sapheno varinx?
What are the two saphenous veins?
Great and small saphenous
Where is the great saphenous vein?
Where is the small saphenous vein?
In between the gastrocnemius
What are the signs of venous insufficiency?
Dilated tortuous veins
Swelling
Venous eczema
Venous ulceration
Haemosiderin, ulcer, rash, swelling. tortious veins
Reverse bottle
How is the peripheral vascular exam done for veins?
WIPE
Mostly inspect legs
Inspection - Trophic changes, colour, pressure sores
Palpate feel along great and small
Special tests
Tap test / Scwartz test
Trendelenberg test
Perthes test
What is the Schwartz test>
The ‘tap test’: Put finger lightly onto saphenofemoral junction. Tap on varicose vein lower down the leg. If they are in continuity (i.e.: the valves are incompetent) then you will feel thrilling from the vein to the junction. This is because those thrills are normally interrupted by competent valves.
What is the Brodie Trendelenberg test?
What is the Perthes test?
