Peripheral Vascular Flashcards
What is the importance of peripheral vascular system
It contains the body’s blood vessels to travel oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products throughout the body
Why is it importance to assess the peripheral vascular system?
Vessels can that are blocked or narrow can cause ischemia, nerocsis, or a MI
What is the most common cause of ischemia?
Atherosclerosis
Ischemia can cause what type of conditions?
Myocardial Infarction (MI), stroke, critical limb ischemia
Signs of ischemia
Chest pain, SOB, tachycardia, Fatigue
Why do we assess the pulses at the same time?
symmetry; if one pulse is stronger than the other, we can assess a possible perfusion issue
Signs of present edema indicates
indentations in the skin
What causes edema?
Leakage from the capillaries or failure of the lymphatic system to return fluid to the body
Why do we assess calf tenderness in assessment?
deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
Why do we assess intermittent claudictation?
Pain; caused by PAD
Clubbing of the fingers or toes can indicate
low levels of oxygenated blood
Why do we assess capillary refill?
Signs of ischemia or necrosis
Why do we assess cyanosis of the skin?
Perfusion of the vessels of that area; prolonged cyanosis can cause a serious medical emergency
What are the objective assessments of a peripheral vascular assessment?
Capillary refill, Clubbing of F/T, Hair distribution, Skin temp and color, Pulses, Edema
Intermittent claudication indicates a _____ issue
Arterial
