Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
What is the peripheral nervous system?
Consists of peripheral nerves and ganglia.
Everything that isn’t the CNS
What are the functions of the PNS?
To transmit sensory information into CNS from skin, joints & internal organs.
To transmit motor commands from the CNS to skeletal muscle, internal organs, blood vessels and glands.
What is a ganglion?
A collection of nerve cell bodies.
e.g. sensory ganglion = collection of sensory nerve cell bodies.
In a sensory neurone, where is the cell body found?
In the middle of the neurone.
If a neurone goes from the CNS to a ganglion what type of neurone is it?
Preganglionic
If a neurone goes from a ganglion to an effector organ, what is it called?
Postganglionic
