Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
Function of Somatic System
Sense and respond to external environment (voluntary and reflex arc)
Function of Autonomic Nervous system
Senses and responds to internal environment (involuntary)
What controls ANS
Hypothalamus and medulla oblongata
ANS- Sympathetic vs Parasympathetic
S- Preps for stress (fight or flight)
•Thoracic to lumber of spine
• Post ganglionic nerve near spinal cord releases norepinephrine as neuroTM which increase force of muscle contractions
PS- Brings back to homeostasis after stress (rest and digest)
• Cervical to caurdral part of spine
• Post ganglions near organs released acetylcholine as NeuroTM
Compare and Contrast the effect of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves on the body
Sympathetic:
Heart Rate- increases
Peristalsis- decreased
Glucose- gets released from liver
Pupils- Dilated inhibiting tears
Bladder Spincter- constricts
Blood flow to skin- increases
Adrenal Gland- release ephinphrine
ParaSympathetic:
Heart Rate- decrease
Peristalsis- increases
Glucoses- stored in liver
Pupils- constricts
Bladder Spincter- relaxes
Blood flow to skin- decreases
Adrenal Gland- no effect
Stimulant drugs
Mimics stimulation provided by sympathetic nervous system
