Peripheral Nervous Sysem (PNS) Flashcards
What are the parts of the PNS?
Cranial nerves and ganglia
Spinal nerves and ganglia/plexus
What is in the cranial nerves and ganglia
12 pairs of cranial nerves
How do he cranial nerves exit
Through the foramina
What is in the spinal nerves and ganglia/plexuses (broken down)
31 pairs of spinal nerves so
8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, 1 coccygeal
How do spinal nerves exit?
Through intervertebral foramina
Bundle of nerve fibers and axons are supported by what? What is the relationship with CNS?
Connective tissue
Conduct info to the CNS
Is it protected or unprotected? By what
Encased in fibrous sheaths so basically not protected
Anterior root of spinal nerves carry what
Carry motor information away from CNS (EFFERENT)
Posterior root of spinal nerves carry what
Information regarding sensation to CNS (AFFERENT)
What are ganglia? What do they give rise to?
Clusters or swellings of cells that give rise to peripheral and central nerve fibers
What are ganglia divided into?
Ganglia and autonomic ganglia
