Peripheral Nerve Flashcards
Where does the dorsal scapular nerve arise from?
C5 root
What muscles does the suprascapular nerve supply?
Supra and infraspinatus
What is the nerve supply to the pectoralis muscle?
Medial and lateral pectoral nerves
What muscle is supplied by the lower subscapular nerve?
Teres major
Where does the lower subscapular nerve arise from?
The posterior cord
What is the sensory nerve supply to the medial arm and forearm to the wrist?
medial ante-brachial cutaneous nerve from the medial cord (C8-T1). Note the arm pit is supplied by the intercostobrachial from T2.
How do you test the obturator nerve?
Leg adduction
What muscles does lateral leg extension test?
Tensor fascia lata
Gluteus medius
What muscles are tested with hip extension?
Gluteus maximus
What is double crush syndrome?
In addition to median or ulnar nerve compression, patients also have cervical radiculopathy
What is Semmes-Weinstein testing?
Monofilament testing for sensory discrimination as it allows threshold testing
What is the Durkan compression test?
Pressure over the proximal carpal tunnel causes symptoms within 30-60 seconds
What are the earliest NCS findings with CTS?
Sensory latency before motor latency
What proportion of patients with CTS have forearm pain?
15%
What are the EMG features of carpal tunnel syndrome?
Active (denervation) fibrillations on EMG
What are the 3 sensory nerves of the ulnar nerve that should be tested?
Palmar ulnar cutaneous nerve
Dorsal ulnar cutaneous nerve
Distal digital nerve
What is Froment’s sign?
Use of thumb flexion to compensate for thumb adduction
What are the sites of ulnar nerve compression around the elbow?
Medial inter-muscular septum Arcade of Struthers Cubital tunnel Osborne's ligament Two head of FCU
What is the Sneddon classification of peripheral nerve injury?
Neuropraxia
Axonotmesis
Neurotmesis
When should sharp lacerations to a nerve be operated on?
Immediately
What is the nerve supply to the rhomboids?
Dorsal scapular nerve
