What changes take place with blood cells during an infection?

A

During viral infection, lymphocyte numbers will rise
During bacterial and fungal infections, neutrophil counts will rise, including bands and less mature cells

Occasional exceptions include

  • —Pertussis – increase in cleaved lymphs
  • —–Leukemias and lymphomas

Children have higher lymphocyte counts than adults

----Many small evenly distributed pink to rose-violet granules
