What changes take place with blood cells during an infection?
A
During viral infection, lymphocyte numbers will rise
During bacterial and fungal infections, neutrophil counts will rise, including bands and less mature cells
Occasional exceptions include
- —Pertussis – increase in cleaved lymphs
- —–Leukemias and lymphomas

Newborns have elevated WBC counts
Children have higher lymphocyte counts than adults

Size and Shape: ---10-16 um Nucleus ---2-5 lobes connected by narrow filament ---N/C ratio 1:3-1:5 ---Dark purple ----Clumped chromatin ---No nucleoli Cytoplasm - Light pink to blue ----Many small evenly distributed pink to rose-violet granules
