Periodontum Flashcards
Label the periodontal Tissues here
What are the 5 periodontal tissues?
-Cementum
-Alveolar Bone
-Tooth
-Gingiva
-Periodontal Ligament
what is the periodontal ligament and what does it contain?
A connective tissue containing;
-Cells
-Extracellular matrix
-Fibres
-Nerves
-Blood Vessels
What are the features of the periodontal ligament matrix?
-Hyaluronate glycosaminoglycans
-Proteoglycans- sugar with protein attached to side chain
-Glycoproteins- Protein with sugar attached to side chain
What is a property of periodontal ligament matrix?
- Behaves as viscous elastic gel
What are the cells of the periodontal Ligament?
-Fibroblasts
-Cementoblasts
-Osteoclasts and cementoclasts
-Epithelial Cells- cell rests (or debris) of Malassez
-Defence Cells
PDL Nerves
Give sensory receptors of PDL
-Mechanoreceptors
-Nociceptors
PDL Nerves
Give autonomic (sympathetic) PDL Nerve controls
-Blood vessels control
-Vasoconstriction
Give 2 types of periodontal fibres
-True periodontal Ligament fibres
-Gingival Ligament fibres
What are the true periodontal Ligament Fibres
Fibres connecting tooth to bone at or apical to alveolar crest
What are gingival ligament fibres
Fibres mainly above the alveolar crest, including ‘free gingival’ fibres
What does the periodontal ligament attach?
Tooth to jaw
What does the periodontal ligament transmit?
Biting forces to alveolar bone
What tissue makes up the periodontal Ligament?
Organised (regular) connective tissue
What is the width of the PDL?
Approx 0.2mm
