Periodontal Treatment 3 Flashcards
Define periodontal disease
A group of diseases affecting the periodontal tissues, representing an immune reaction (innate + adaptive) to adjacent microbial plaque
Local risk factors for periodontal disease (10)
ACQUIRED:
1. Plaque
- Calculus
- Overhangs
- Poorly contoured restorations + prosthetic crowns
- Orthodontic appliances
- Occlusal trauma
ANATOMICAL:
1. Malpositioned teeth
- Root groves
- Concavities + furcations
- Enamel pearls
Systemic risk factors for periodontal disease (10)
NON-MODIFIABLE
1. Ageing
- Genetic disorders: Down syndromes, papillon lefevre syndrome
- Gender (males)
MODIFIABLE
1. Smoking
- Poorly controlled diabetes
- HIV/leukaemia
- Osteopenia/Osteoporosis
- Stress + hormonal changes
- Meds
- Poor nutrition
Effect of smoking (2)
- Decreased healing capacity
2. reduced blood flow as a result
What can hyperglycaemia in diabetes modulate?
May modulate RANKL + OPG and so contribute to alveolar bone destruction
Name 3 drugs that can contribute to gingival enlargement
- ANTICONVULSANT
- Phenytoin - IMMUNOSUPPRESANTS
- Cyclosporin - CA CHANNEL BLOCKERS
- Nifedipine
- Amlodipine
What type of cells does gingival enlargement cause an increase in?
More fibroblasts
What does gingival swelling increase? (2)
- More intracellular fluid
- Increased permeabilisation of the vessels
Define atherosclerosis
Inflammation of the vessel wall
What is peridontitis a risk for (pregnancy related) and non? (4)
- Pre-eclampsia
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Alzheimers
- Respiratory system
What does increase of BP depend on the activation of?
Activation of lymphocytes T
